KAAP KOFFIE: NOT A COFFEE BUSINESS.
Shall we skip the blabla barista show off about the best coffee in town? Great! Because here’s the thing. Every day the Dutch consume around 50 million cups of coffee. After the beans are harvested somewhere around the equator huge container ships sail it our way. That’s not sustainable. To put it mildly. So yes, we should talk about the income of the local farmers dividing margins equally and yes, we have to choose organic farming over industrial agriculture and yes, we should reuse the grits after enjoying our daily cup. We do all that, obviously. But the one thing that should be on top of everybody’s list, as impossible as it sounds, is the way we transport the beans to Holland. We use a sailing boat. No heavy polluting oil fuel containership, not even the tiniest outboard motor: the currents of the sea and the power of the wind. That’s it.
